A significant student achievement gap persists between high poverty urban schools and suburban schools. AUSL was founded to close this gap. We now manage 14 turnaround schools situated in Chicago's most challenging west and south side communities. These schools, significantly staffed from AUSL's 7 teacher training academies, were chosen for turnaround because they were the worst performing in the city and had been so for years, if not decades. While we have not yet closed the achievement gap, we have made substantial progress since program inception, giving us and the communities we serve the confidence in our approach to continue and expand this important work.
