FAQs

1.

What are the eligibility requirements for the AUSL teacher preparation program?

Elementary Applicants (Type 3 Certification)
Secondary Applicants (Type 9 Certification)

2.

How do I apply to AUSL?

See Application on this website.

3.

May I apply to AUSL if I am a certified teacher?

Yes. We have a specialized residency program for certified teachers with 0-3 years of experience. Please contact Anthony Kim, our Admissions Manager, at akim@ausl-chicago.org for more details.

4.

May I submit an application before I receive my test scores for the basic skills test and/or state content area exam?

Yes. AUSL will accept applications without the official score report(s) as long as a copy of the test registration statement is enclosed. Acceptance into the program will be contingent upon receiving a passing grade on the appropriate exam(s).

5.

I only took one course at a university. Do I still need to submit a transcript from that school?

Yes. AUSL requires an official sealed transcript from all undergraduate and graduate institutions you have attended, regardless of how many credits were earned.

6.

How long is the AUSL teacher preparation program?

5 years. Resident teachers train for 12 months and commit to teaching in an underperforming Chicago Public School for a minimum of 4 years.

7.

What is the cost of the program?

AUSL provides a $32,000 training salary to Residents. Tuition for the Class of 2008 is approximately $10,500. Please keep in mind that you will be a full-time student of National-Louis University, and therefore eligible for financial aid through their financial aid office. Roughly the same information holds for already-certified Residents who enter our program with the University of Illinois at Chicago. If you plan to apply for financial aid, complete your online FAFSA application.

8.

Do I have to live in Chicago to participate in the AUSL program?

AUSL does not have a residency requirement. However, the Chicago Public Schools system does require its employees to live in Chicago. You will have to abide by their residency requirement when you begin your full-time teaching career following graduation from our program.
