Enix Daniels, Sr., parent of two children at Bethune:
Before the turnaround, my son, who was in second grade, would come home from school talking about the same book, like that was all they ever read. His report card came home and said he passed and I said, “Really?” I was glad when I heard Bethune was going to be turned around.
Now he’s in third grade, and his scores went up 11 percent. He got an A in reading and an A in math and I’m very proud of him. He’s in a lot of after-school programs, like Boy Scouts. And he likes his art classes, which they didn’t have before the turnaround. He even takes paint and paper to school. He also goes to Saturday school and he loves it. He gets up in the morning on Saturdays before I do – he’s fully dressed, his teeth brushed. Now my pre-kindergarten son wants to come to Saturday school!
With the new staff, I see a lot of love. The school has great leadership and staff – they’re family. And I see more dads there, taking their kids to school.
For parents of schools that are going to be turned around, there’s a lot I can tell them and a lot I can show them. My son keeps all of his papers, and I could show them, this is where he started off and this is where he is now. |
