Obtain your masters degree while obtaining the hands-on
skills and training necessary to be an effective teacher in urban school settings
The Academy for Urban School Leadership partners with nationally recognized universities to provide our residents with a Masters Degree and certification coursework. National-Louis University and the Erikson Institute have partnered with AUSL to enhance the success of our Urban Teacher Residency Program.
How are the Masters Degree Program and AUSL unique?
Our university partners developed a curriculum specifically tailored to AUSL’s UTR Program. Residents acquire year-long training on urban education issues, diversity, and behavior management strategies. AUSL staff, our mentor teachers, and the university professors provide residents with the pedagogy and real time classroom experiences in an actual Chicago Public school. Residents become engaged in an atmosphere of inquiry, self-improvement, self-reflection, and interactive assessment, which prepares them to become effective teachers in urban environments.
The year of residency begins each year in late June and graduation takes place in early June of the following year. Full-time coursework begins in the first summer and continues throughout the school year. Residents will be in school all day, Monday through Friday during the summer months. When school opens, residents will work in an AUSL Training Academy with their mentor teacher Monday through Thursday and then resume graduate course work all day on Fridays. Residents working with Erikson will also have evening courses throughout the school year.
