The success of AUSL's Chicago Teacher Residency program is based on the mentoring and coaching provided by highly skilled, experienced teachers. You will work four days a week in the classroom at an AUSL teacher training CPS school, with full-time coaching and guidance from an experienced Mentor teacher. Experience intensive and individualized practice and coaching that will shape you into a confident, capable, and reflective teacher ready for the special challenges of an urban school.

Koldyke

“AUSL provides an amazing support system through mentor teachers, MRC's and my fellow cohort. We work together to achieve the goal of closing the achievement gap and it feels great to be side-by-side with like minded individuals who are all passionate about the education of our urban city students. .”

Melissa Hausser,
AUSL Resident Class of 2011

Koldyke

“Having a mentor was awesome!
She was there to pick me up
when I failed and also there to celebrate my successes!
The immediate feedback was invaluable to help me
plan my next lesson.”

Curtis Hill,
AUSL graduate 2009

Coaching Staff

Mentor Teachers: High quality teachers that provide individualized coaching for each resident in their classroom. Each mentor is assigned one or two residents during the training year and provide residents with highly individualized support. Mentor teachers create opportunities in all aspects of the teaching experience: classroom observation, coaching, practice and reflection.

Mentor Resident Coaches (MRCs): Experienced, veteran teacher housed at each Training Academy to support residents and their mentors. MRCs bridge the gap between university course work and the classroom training for residents and offer professional development in curriculum and instruction. They also design and implement a program specific to the skill set of each resident and mentor.

Schedule

Summer: Full-time university course work, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Friday at National Louis University (downtown campus). Half of the graduate course work for the Master's degree is delivered during the summer; it is an intense academic experience and a full-time commitment (or more). Classes are held from mid-June to early August.

School Year: Residents work in classrooms with their mentor teacher Monday – Thursday, whenever school is in session. Fridays are dedicated to university classes at National Louis.

Summer: In mid-July, residents who will be teaching at new turnaround schools attend 3 – 5 weeks of professional development to prepare for the opening of school.

Ongoing Support

AUSL program graduates who are employed as CPS teachers in AUSL schools also receive ongoing coaching and support from AUSL coaches assigned to their school.
